History on back of QUODDY HEAD: Built in 1808, this light ironically stands on the easternmost point of land in the United States. It overlooks Quoddy Narrows, a channel which separates the United States from Canada. Situated on a forty-foot-high cliff, the tower rises eighty-five feet above the sea. This red and white striped light houses a third-order Fresnel lens and has a foghorn which is activated by a robotic fog-sensing device. Patches of Arctic tundra, more often seen thousands of miles to the north, grow within a few yards of the tower.
